By again winning the men’s veteran D coxless pairs event at the Clydesdale ARC regatta on the River Clyde in Glasgow last Saturday, Inverness Rowing Club members John Sharkey and Dave Rothwell achieved a remarkable treble of wins in the event having won this event at regattas in Aberdeen and Strathclyde Park over the previous two weekends. In a closely fought final, they overcame the challenge of a determined crew from Glasgow RC to win their golds by just under two lengths.

Both athletes also took part in separate single sculling events, Sharkey recording a solid two length win over fellow Inverness member Alastair Duff in the men’s veteran D/E event whilst Rothwell challenged well in his veteran novice C/D event but just missed out on a win.

Alastair Duff also took part in the men’s R2 single sculling event but despite having an early lead over the first part of the 1500 metre course was eventually overtaken by his opponent from Clyde ARC. Roy Sinclair took part in the men’s veteran F/G single sculls event, but narrowly lost out to his opponent from Glasgow RC.

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

At the North East regatta last Saturday on the River Dee in Aberdeen, John Sharkey and Dave Rothwell from Inverness Rowing Club won gold in the Men’s Veteran Coxless Pairs event when they beat a crew from Aberdeen Boat Club by 6.5 seconds. Both athletes also raced in their respective Men’s Veteran and Novice Single Sculls events but missed out on achieving gold medal placings.

In the three day British Universities Rowing Championships held at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, Inverness rower Alan Sinclair representing the University of East London struck gold on Monday in the Men's Championship Quadruple Sculls event where he and his fellow crew members clinched their medals by a margin of 6.02 seconds over a crew from Loughborough University. This followed Alan’s other gold medal in the Men’s Championship Coxed Fours event and his silver medal in the Men’s Championship Double Sculls event on Sunday. Alan’s bronze medal win was achieved in the Men’s Coxless Pairs event on Monday.

Meanwhile in the first World Cup regatta of the season in Belgrade, Inverness’s own world sculling champion Imogen Walsh was paired with Oxford’s Andrea Dennis in the women’s lightweight double sculls event. Narrowly missing out on a place in the ‘A’ final by a mere 0.13 seconds, they nevertheless claimed a good second place finish behind China in their ‘B’ final.

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

Inverness Rowing Club achieved success in winning two gold medals and a number other good performances at the two day Strathclyde Park Regatta in Hamilton last weekend in variable weather conditions.

In the breezy conditions on Saturday, the women’s veteran quadruple sculls crew of Hazel Geddes, Susanne Standish-Hunter, Hazel Smith and Leslie Foale recorded an outstanding win in their event beating crews from Tyne RC and Tyne United RC. Also racing on Saturday, Mary Clouston achieved a solid second placed finish in women’s veteran single sculls behind Eva Rankin from Loch Lomond RC.

In the difficult cross wind conditions on the Sunday, the Inverness men’s veteran coxless pair of John Sharkey and Dave Rothwell convincingly won their event by over two lengths ahead of two crews from Aberdeen BC and a crew from Glasgow RC. Later in the day, Sharkey raced in the men’s veteran single sculls event to claim a satisfactory third placed finish behind the winner, former international Willie Brown from Stirling RC.

The next main season regatta at which Inverness athletes will be competing will be the North East Regatta which takes place on the River Dee in Aberdeen on 5th/6th May.

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

Having taken over from Roy Sinclair as the communication person for Scottish Rowing, Carol Wallace feels it is time to ask all you budding journalists out there to submit articles for a info/news sheet for our sport. The head season is over - how did your club fare? Was it a series of training races building fitness or were you really pleased with your performances? As we move into Regatta season, what are your aims/goals for your club? Do you have any plans for publicising the sport during the Olympics - big screen showings in the club-house? Taster sessions for the public? Let us help publicise to the public and also to the rest of the rowing community. Please submit articles and pictures to Carol (comms@scottish-rowing.org.uk) before 30th April 2012. Her aim is to produce a downloadable magazine - preferably with lots of pictures and not too text heavy. We know there are lots of rowing photographers out there so if there are any pictures of interest, please forward them too (copyright will remain with you). Please don't make us come and twist arms for copy!

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

Other work undertaken included the securing of loose rubber matting on one of the launching pontoons.

Thanks to all who assisted.

Special thanks to Mike Lofts and Russell Thomson of British Waterways Scotland for their co-operation, support and assistance in arranging to temporarily lower the canal water level to allow the works to be undertaken.

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

The Tideway Eights Head of the River Race took place on Saturday 17th March on the River Thames from Mortlake to Putney in misty, damp conditions.

A strong international crew from the Czech Rowing Federation which included several world champion oarsmen wrested the first place away from last years winners Leander Club by a margin of just over 20 seconds with the Molesey Club crew following 5 seconds behind in third place.
